The collection contains two poems "Dulcinea" and "Oh! no--we never speak in French," 1840 and 1847. The latter may nave been sent to Charles Godfrey Leland. There is also a fragment, ca. 1852, of "The red box, a story in Pencil sketches" Letters to Leland, 1855-1857, send recipes to the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, ask him to a business meeting, comment on a recent severe illness and convalescence and request new sheets for traveling.

Born in Philadelphia, humorist Charles Godfrey Leland wrote quality material in a variety of literary forms, but is best remembered for his light comic verse, often written in a German dialect. Eliza Leslie was born in Philadelphia, and spent part of her childhood in England. After returning to America, she became famous for her cookbooks, and her popular works on housekeeping and manners were well-regarded and widely used. She also wrote fiction and edited The Gift.
